Village community shops are, on the outside, very simlar to our existing Danehill Stores - they serve the community providing the goods and services that small villages need, some with a Post Office, some with other services. However, there is an important difference - the community shop is owned by the community, with individuals having a small share in the business. This not only provides a way of raising finance to set up, it also ensures that village residents feel a part of, and are involved in making use of, the community shop.
There is a wealth of information on the Village Retail Services Association website. They (VIRSA) support rural shops and provide support and information to many successful community shop projects around the country. In addition, on their website you can see just how many community shops there are in Sussex, Surrey and Kent. |
